The Future
What might the future of the Pennine Journey hold?
Will it meet satisfactorily the two considerations that prompted its development?
One of these was partly satisfied when the Wainwright Society, at its 2009 Annual General Meeting, adopted an additional object to its constitution namely:-
“To foster and enhance Alfred Wainwright’s standing in the field of long distance footpath walking.”
Hopefully everyone that is involved in the Journey’s development in the coming years will be mindful that it was conceived as a tribute to AW.
The other consideration, that of bringing economic benefits to those areas through which the route passes, has many ramifications and will mean effort and support from various authorities and agencies to achieve the ambition of making the Journey one of the most popular long distance footpaths in Great Britain.
What steps will be necessary for this to be achieved?
- The publication of the guide book
- Following close behind should be the waymarking of the route and here the support of the relevant authorities will be vital. In these times of economic stringency for the county councils and national park authorities concerned the major part of the funds to enable the initial essential waymarking to be done will need to be raised externally. All those involved in the preparation of the guide book have agreed that 90% of all royalties earned will go to the Wainwright Society to be allocated to the waymarking, maintenance and improvements to the Journey’s route with the remaining 10% going to the Great North Air Ambulance.
- The creation of a register of accommodation on the website.
- Promotion of the walk using the media, walking magazines and tourism agencies.
- Meeting the criteria of the Ordnance Survey for its inclusion on future editions of O.S.maps.
At the 2010 AGM the Wainwright Society agreed to the establishment of a Waymarking Fund into which the 90% of the guide's royalties mentioned earlier will go together with profits from guide book sales made through this website, through that of the Wainwright Society and from Society members.
